Joe Speaking 1.0 is here 🎉
In our last letter, I said 1.0 was on its way. It’s here now, on the web and in the iPhone app.
Eight months after our alpha launch, this is our first formal release. Thank you for practising with us, for reporting what broke and for telling us what to build next. Much of 1.0 came straight from your feedback.

Powered by the world’s most advanced real-time voice model, the Advanced examiner listens the whole time, like a real examiner. It reacts while you talk, follows up when an answer is thin and lets you cut in naturally, through Parts 1, 2 and 3.

Mainland China, and your language 🌏
🚀 Mainland China 1.0 is our first release that formally supports learners in mainland China. The app opens fast, questions play straight away, and recordings, transcripts and feedback get through on slow networks.
🗣️ Chinese, Japanese and Korean The app now works in Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean, as well as English. It follows your device language, and you can switch in Settings. IELTS questions and your answers stay in English.
📊 A results page that reads like a test report Your overall band, the four criteria and the checks behind each one, quoting your own words.

Why I built Joe Speaking 💬
At its heart, Joe Speaking is about helping you actually open your mouth: less rote memorisation, more real speaking through actual conversations and solid feedback. When I first came to Canada two years ago, I was nervous and scared to speak, too. You just have to talk and stop overthinking it. Language is for connecting with people, not just for passing a test.
