CELPIP speaking tasks

CELPIP Speaking Tasks 1-8

Use this guide to understand what each CELPIP Speaking task asks for before you start a full practice attempt.

Task-by-task overview

Timing and image requirements

Practice focus for every task

The eight tasks need different habits

Task 1 is advice, Task 2 is personal experience, Tasks 3 and 4 use pictures, Task 5 compares and persuades, Task 6 handles a difficult situation, Task 7 supports an opinion, and Task 8 explains an unusual visual situation.

Timing changes the answer

A 60-second picture answer needs fast organization. A 90-second advice or opinion answer needs enough support. Practicing with the right timer changes the shape of the response.

Guide first, then record

Read the task map, choose one weak task, then record inside the app. The useful work starts when you hear your own answer and repeat it with a better structure.

Use this before full practice

The guide is useful when the task names are familiar but the answer strategy, timing, or repeat plan is still blurry.

  • Use this page to understand the full task map before you start a timed attempt.
  • Choose one weak task to repeat when a full attempt shows the same mistake more than once.
  • Keep the timing difference visible: picture tasks need fast organization, while 90-second tasks need stronger support.

All 8 task pages

Each of the 8 task pages gives a more focused explanation, sample prompt style, common mistake, and practice direction.

  • Task 1: Giving Advice - Practice one direct recommendation first, then add one or two supporting details. Avoid listing many ideas without explaining why one choice helps.
  • Task 2: Personal Experience - Practice a small story instead of a life summary. Use time markers such as “last year,” “at first,” and “after that” to keep the listener oriented.
  • Task 3: Describing a Scene - Move from big picture to details: location, main people, actions, and likely mood. This keeps the answer coherent under the timer.
  • Task 4: Making Predictions - Use prediction language such as “probably,” “might,” and “it looks like.” Then explain which detail in the picture supports your prediction.
  • Task 5: Comparing and Persuading - Use the longer preparation time to choose your side. Compare two features, then explain why your preferred option fits the person or situation better.
  • Task 6: Difficult Situation - Practice acknowledging the problem before giving a solution. A useful structure is apology or empathy, explanation, proposed action, and next step.
  • Task 7: Expressing Opinions - Practice a simple opinion structure: position, reason one, reason two, short conclusion. This helps you use the full 90 seconds without rambling.
  • Task 8: Unusual Situation - Start by identifying the unusual detail, then describe the surrounding scene. This prevents the answer from becoming a normal picture description.

How it works

  1. 01

    Read the map

Understand the purpose of each task before starting a full attempt.

  2. 02

    Pick one weak task

Choose the task where your answer loses structure fastest.

  3. 03

    Record and repeat

Practice that task, review the recording, and repeat with a narrower goal.
